Effectiveness and Safety of GLP-1 Drugs for Improving Spinal Fusion Results: A Detailed Review

Updated

Abstract

In a review of 11 studies involving 14,344 participants, GLP-1 receptor agonists significantly reduced the risk of pseudarthrosis at six months (risk ratio = 0.63) and at twelve months (risk ratio = 0.64).

  • GLP-1 receptor agonists are associated with enhanced glycemic control and improved vascular function.
  • There is a significant increase in acute kidney injury risk (risk ratio = 1.30).
  • No significant differences in outcomes were noted for pseudoarthrosis at 24 months, readmission rates, cerebrovascular accidents, or deep vein thrombosis.
  • Subgroup analysis suggested potential benefits in diabetic patients regarding bone healing.
  • The findings indicate a need for careful monitoring due to the increased risk of kidney injury.
  • Further research is necessary to confirm these results and establish guidelines for using GLP-1 receptor agonists in spinal fusion.
