Heart rhythm

Glucagon-like peptide-1 and the risk of irregular heartbeat, independent of weight loss

Updated

Abstract

Essence

GLP-1 therapy was linked to lower atrial fibrillation and mortality risks even among patients without weight loss.

Evidence

A retrospective single-center propensity-matched cohort study of 12,812 GLP-1 initiators used chart-reviewed atrial fibrillation outcomes, 6-month weight trends, and competing-risk and time-varying models.

Caveat

The analysis was observational, and only semaglutide showed a statistically significant atrial fibrillation reduction, so it does not prove a class-wide weight-independent antiarrhythmic effect.
