GLP-1 Receptor Agonists and Recovery After Joint Replacement Surgery: A Systematic Review

Abstract

A review of 15 studies involving 39,355 patients indicates that preoperative use of glucagon-like peptide-1 receptor agonists (GLP-1 RAs) may be linked to improved postoperative outcomes in joint arthroplasty.

  • Nine studies reported more favorable postoperative outcomes for patients using GLP-1 RAs, while three showed mixed results.
  • Two studies predominantly indicated worse outcomes for GLP-1 RA users, and one study found no significant difference.
  • Lower rates of periprosthetic joint infection and hospital readmission were frequently observed in hip and knee arthroplasty patients using GLP-1 RAs.
  • The most consistent benefits were noted among individuals with diabetes or morbid obesity.
  • Evidence regarding shoulder arthroplasty outcomes was limited and showed greater variability.
  • The overall certainty of evidence is low due to non-randomized study designs and potential biases.
