Extra healthcare costs linked to diabetes treatment with GLP-1 medicines in US adults

Among 7,670 adults with diabetes, 7.5% used glucagon-like peptide-1 receptor agonists (GLP-1 RAs).

  • GLP-1 RA use increased from 4.3% in 2016 to 10.6% in 2020.
  • Users of GLP-1 RAs had significantly higher total health care expenditures ($22,029) compared to nonusers ($15,165).
  • Payer expenditures for GLP-1 RA users were $20,023, compared to $13,758 for nonusers.
  • Out-of-pocket expenses for GLP-1 RA users were $2,006, while nonusers incurred $1,407.
  • GLP-1 RA users had an adjusted excess expenditure of $5,417 in total costs, $4,764 in payer costs, and $436 in out-of-pocket costs.
