Glucagon-like peptide-1 treatment is linked to less nerve damage and pain in type 2 diabetes

Abstract

The overall frequency of diabetic peripheral neuropathy (DPN) was 58.6% among 500 patients with type 2 diabetes.

  • Painful DPN was observed in 26.2% of patients.
  • GLP-1 receptor agonist treatment was associated with a lower frequency of DPN (46.4%) compared to standard treatment (60.6%).
  • Patients treated with GLP-1 receptor agonists also had a lower incidence of painful DPN (10.1%) compared to standard treatment (35.1%) and sodium-glucose cotransporter-2 inhibitors (28.3%).
  • After adjusting for clinical and metabolic factors, GLP-1 receptor agonist treatment was linked to lower odds of DPN (odds ratio 0.60) and painful DPN (odds ratio 0.32).
  • Neuropathy severity and pain intensity were lower in patients receiving GLP-1 receptor agonists.
