Use of Glucagon-like Peptide-1 Receptor Agonists in Hospital Patients: A Study Across Multiple Centers

Updated

Abstract

In a study of 1,278,863 hospitalizations, only 0.3% of patients with type 2 diabetes received GLP-1 receptor agonists.

  • 31% of hospitalized patients had type 2 diabetes, while approximately 26% had obesity.
  • The prevalence of cardiovascular disease among these patients was 36%.
  • Low usage of GLP-1 receptor agonists was observed despite high hospitalization rates for diabetes.
  • In contrast, 60% of patients received insulin and 14% received sulfonylureas during their hospital stays.
  • Factors associated with higher odds of GLP-1RA use included being aged 50 to 70 years, having a glycated hemoglobin level greater than 9%, and belonging to the highest income quintile.
