GLP-1 Receptor Agonist Treatment and Risk of Lung and Body Infections in People with Diabetes and Delayed Stomach Emptying

Updated

Abstract

GLP-1 receptor agonists were associated with lower rates of pneumonia (12.2% vs. 13.2%) and sepsis (11.1% vs. 12.8%) in patients with diabetes and gastroparesis.

  • Patients using GLP-1 receptor agonists had lower incidences of pneumonitis (2.5% vs. 3.6%) and mechanical ventilation (3.3% vs. 4.4%) compared to non-users.
  • The risk of bacteremia was also lower among GLP-1 users (4.4% vs. 5.2%).
  • Empyema and acute respiratory distress syndrome were numerically lower in GLP-1 users, although the difference was not quantified.
  • Ventilator-associated pneumonia and lung abscess occurrences were rare and similar in both groups.
  • No patients in either cohort required enteral feeding support.
