Use of Glucagon-like Peptide-1 Receptor Agonists and Their Link to Stroke and Death in People with Silent Brain Artery Narrowing

Abstract

GLP-1 receptor agonist use is associated with lower 1-year risk of ischemic stroke and all-cause mortality in adults with asymptomatic intracranial atherosclerotic arterial stenosis.

  • In a cohort of adults with asymptomatic ICAS, GLP-1 receptor agonist use was linked to a 1-year ischemic stroke risk of 4.40% compared to 6.10% in non-users.
  • The all-cause mortality rate was 3.40% in GLP-1RA users versus 9.40% in non-users.
  • A composite outcome of ischemic stroke or mortality occurred in 7.50% of GLP-1RA users compared to 15.00% of non-users.
  • These findings persisted after controlling for various cardiometabolic risk factors, suggesting possible benefits beyond traditional risk management.
