Glucagon-like peptide-1 receptor agonist linked to recovery after planned hip replacement surgery

Abstract

Among 13,206 patients, 2.5% were using GLP-1RA during total hip arthroplasty (THA).

  • Patients on GLP-1RA were generally younger, had higher body mass index (BMI), and presented with more comorbidities compared to those not using the medication.
  • At 30 days post-surgery, higher rates of pulmonary embolism, acute kidney injury, hypoglycemia, and overall complications were observed in GLP-1RA users.
  • However, after adjusting for factors like age and comorbidities, GLP-1RA use was not linked to increased risks of adverse medical outcomes at 30 days.
  • No significant differences were found in complications for 90-day readmissions, surgical site infections, or 1-year postoperative outcomes between the two groups.
