The Knee

Use of GLP-1 receptor drugs before knee replacement surgery and its link to recovery outcomes

Updated

Abstract

Among 26,154 total knee arthroplasty patients, 914 (3.5%) used a GLP-1 receptor agonist.

  • GLP-1 receptor agonist use was associated with 45% lower odds of one-year implant complications.
  • Patients using GLP-1 receptor agonists had a 10% shorter length of hospital stay compared to non-users.
  • No significant differences in 30-day medical complications, 90-day surgical site infections, or readmissions were observed.
  • 73% of GLP-1 receptor agonist users had diabetes, indicating a potential focus on this subgroup for future studies.
