Weight Gain and Pregnancy High Blood Pressure Linked to Early Use of Glucagon-Like Peptide-1 Receptor Agonists Before and During Pregnancy

Updated

Abstract

Among 243 patients exposed to GLP-1 receptor agonists (GLP-1RAs) before pregnancy, 65.4% continued use during pregnancy.

  • Exposure to GLP-1RAs was associated with lower odds of gestational weight gain below recommendations in individuals using it for weight management (adjusted odds ratio [aOR] 0.38).
  • No association was found between GLP-1RA exposure and gestational weight gain in individuals with pregestational diabetes.
  • GLP-1RA exposure was associated with reduced odds of developing hypertensive disorders of pregnancy (HDP) compared to unexposed individuals in both pregestational diabetes (aOR 0.52) and weight-management cohorts (aOR 0.51).
  • The associations with reduced odds of HDP were more pronounced among patients exposed to GLP-1RAs during pregnancy.
