Effects of Glucagon-like Peptide-1 Drugs on Asthma and Asthma Linked to Obesity: Review of Clinical Results and Underlying Mechanisms

Updated

Abstract

GLP-1 receptor agonists are associated with reduced asthma exacerbations and healthcare utilization in populations with obesity and/or type 2 diabetes.

  • Observational studies indicate that GLP-1RA use correlates with fewer asthma exacerbations.
  • The association with improved asthma outcomes persists even after adjusting for body mass index or glycemic markers.
  • Preclinical models show reductions in airway inflammation and hyperresponsiveness, though these findings have substantial risk of bias.
  • Evidence for airway-intrinsic effects of GLP-1RAs is primarily preclinical and not yet robust.
  • Current human data are limited by confounding factors and population selection.
