Interactions Between Glucagon-Like Peptide 1 Drugs and Oral Medicines: A Systematic Review

Updated

Abstract

Treatment with glucagon-like peptide 1 receptor agonists (GLP1RAs) resulted in unaffected or reduced absorption of various oral medications.

  • GLP1RAs may cause delayed gastric emptying, which could influence the absorption of oral drugs.
  • Twenty-two reports and six prescribing sheets were analyzed for drug-drug interactions involving GLP1RAs.
  • Drugs with high solubility and permeability showed either unaffected or reduced absorption when co-administered with GLP1RAs.
  • No clinically significant changes in drug exposure were observed for oral medications taken alongside GLP1RAs.
  • Dose adjustments for oral drugs may not be necessary when used concurrently with GLP1RAs.
  • Caution is advised in patients with kidney dysfunction or when using medications with a narrow therapeutic index.
