Glucagon-like Peptide-1 receptor agonists' direct effects on mitochondria in human cell models: A review and analysis

Meta-analysis showed significantly improved bioenergetics and reduced mitochondrial reactive oxygen species following GLP-1 receptor agonist treatment.

  • Seventeen studies were included in the systematic review, with eleven contributing to the quantitative analysis of mitochondrial outcomes.
  • GLP-1 receptor agonists may enhance mitochondrial function by improving bioenergetics, as indicated by a standardized mean difference of 1.109.
  • A reduction in mitochondrial reactive oxygen species was observed with a standardized mean difference of -3.489.
  • No significant effect on mitochondrial membrane potential was found in the primary analysis, though a potential improvement was suggested in a sensitivity analysis.
  • Overall certainty of the evidence for primary outcomes was very low due to methodological issues and variability among studies.
