Use of Glucagon-Like Peptide-1 Drugs in Pregnancies with Preexisting Diabetes and Their Link to Birth Defects

Abstract

24.4% of patients with pregestational diabetes used a glucagon-like peptide-1 receptor agonist (GLP-1 RA) during pregnancy.

  • Patients using GLP-1 RA were more likely to develop pre-eclampsia (13.1% vs. 11.9%).
  • Cesarean delivery rates were higher among GLP-1 RA users (44.4% vs. 38.9%).
  • The rate of first trimester pregnancy loss/termination was greater in GLP-1 RA users (9.8% vs. 7.5%).
  • Preterm delivery rates were elevated in patients using GLP-1 RA (23.1% vs. 20.8%).
  • There was no significant difference in the overall rate of congenital malformations between groups (3.3% in both).
  • GLP-1 RA use was linked to a higher occurrence of genital malformations (0.7% vs. 0.6%) and urinary malformations (0.5% vs. 0.4%).
