Effectiveness and safety of tirzepatide versus semaglutide in organ transplant patients

Updated

Abstract

In a cohort of 73 solid-organ transplant recipients, both tirzepatide and semaglutide improved key diabetes management metrics.

  • Weight, body mass index, hemoglobin A1c, fasting plasma glucose, and triglyceride levels improved significantly with both treatments.
  • Tirzepatide resulted in a greater reduction in median triglyceride levels compared to semaglutide, despite a shorter treatment duration.
  • Adverse events were more common in the semaglutide group, including gastrointestinal issues and infections.
  • No significant changes were observed in tacrolimus levels, graft function, or mortality in either treatment group.
  • Both tirzepatide and semaglutide were effective and generally safe for managing diabetes in this population.
