Glucagon-Like Peptide-1 Receptor Agonists in Type 2 Diabetes and Heart Disease: Past, Present, and Future

Updated

Abstract

Five glucagon-like peptide-1 receptor agonists (GLP-1 RAs) have been shown to reduce atherosclerotic cardiovascular events in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM).

  • GLP-1 RAs are associated with a reduction in major adverse cardiovascular events and all-cause mortality compared to placebo.
  • Some GLP-1 RAs may prevent the onset of macroalbuminuria, indicating renal protective effects.
  • These drugs have been shown to lower blood pressure and positively affect body weight in patients with T2DM.
  • Studies indicate a low risk of hypoglycemia and no increase in pancreatitis events with GLP-1 RA use.
  • GLP-1 RAs are recommended in guidelines for patients with T2DM at high cardiovascular risk, reflecting their broader benefits beyond glycemic control.
