Separate and combined effects of two natural gut hormones on blood sugar control in healthy people

Abstract

Glucose excursions were significantly higher when both GIP and GLP-1 were inhibited compared to when either hormone was inhibited alone.

  • Endogenous GIP is associated with greater effects on postprandial plasma glucose excursions compared to endogenous GLP-1.
  • Insulin secretion was reduced by 37% when both GIP and GLP-1 were inhibited, indicating a substantial role of these hormones in insulin regulation.
  • Higher glucagon levels and faster gastric emptying were observed when both hormones were blocked.
  • GIP and GLP-1 contribute additively to postprandial glucose regulation in healthy individuals.
