How Drinking Sugar After Exercise Affects Energy Use During Next Exercise in the Heat

Updated

Abstract

Consumption of 220 g of glucose during recovery significantly increased glycogen synthesis compared to 55 g.

  • Glycogen synthesis was approximately fivefold greater in the 220 g glucose condition than in the 55 g condition.
  • Total carbohydrate oxidation rates were higher during exercise after consuming 220 g of glucose compared to 55 g.
  • While more of the ingested glucose remained unoxidized after exercise in the 220 g condition, exercise duration was similar in both conditions.
  • Exercise was limited by thermoregulation, as indicated by reaching an aural temperature greater than 39 degrees Celsius.
