How eating carbohydrates after long runs affects muscle energy use in later exercise
Updated
Abstract
A higher muscle glycogen resynthesis was observed with 175 g of carbohydrate intake compared to 50 g during a 4-hour recovery.
- Muscle glycogen resynthesis was significantly greater in the 175 g carbohydrate group (75 +/- 20 mmol x kg dry matter -1) than in the 50 g group (31 +/- 11 mmol x kg dry matter -1).
- The rate of muscle glycogen utilization during subsequent exercise was similar for both carbohydrate intake levels (39 +/- 10 vs. 46 +/- 11 mmol x kg dry matter -1).
- Carbohydrate intake during recovery did not impact muscle glycogen utilization in later exercise.
