Links Between Blood Sugar Response and Heart Disease Risk: Updated Results from Combined Studies

Updated

Abstract

High glycemic index (GI) and glycemic load (GL) are associated with increased risk of cardiovascular disease (CVD) events, including diabetes and stroke.

  • High GI is strongly associated with diabetes and metabolic syndrome.
  • High GL is linked to an increased risk of coronary heart disease, particularly in females.
  • Individuals with preexisting cardiovascular disease or high body mass index may experience heightened CVD mortality with high GL.
  • High GI is associated with CVD and all-cause mortality only in females without preexisting cardiovascular disease.
  • Dietary interventions focusing on reducing both GI and GL are suggested to prevent CVD outcomes across all populations.
