Gut Hormones in Anorexia Nervosa: Effects of Weight Restoration

Abstract

GIP levels were higher by 42.9% in patients with anorexia nervosa compared to healthy controls.

  • In patients with anorexia nervosa (AN), fasting glucose and insulin levels were lower by 8.4% and 42.6%, respectively, compared to healthy controls.
  • After short-term weight restoration, GIP, GLP-1, and glicentin levels decreased by 30.4%, 9.7%, and 15.7%, respectively, while only GIP returned to normal levels.
  • Increased GIP levels in patients with AN were positively associated with disordered eating and depressive symptoms, regardless of body mass index standard deviation score (BMI-SDS).
  • Changes in GIP levels post-weight restoration negatively correlated with changes in glucose levels, suggesting a relationship between GIP and glucose metabolism in AN.
