Gut Microbiome Patterns Linked to Indole Production in Tryptophan Metabolism in Hemodialysis Patients

Abstract

Shotgun metagenome sequencing of stool samples from 85 hemodialysis patients revealed significant metabolic differences related to tryptophan levels.

  • Higher tryptophan levels are linked to enhanced metabolism of tyrosine and pectin.
  • Lower tryptophan levels correlate with metabolism involving glutamate, fructose, and valine.
  • Increased concentrations of 3-indoxyl sulfate are associated with metabolism related to alanine and fatty acids.
  • Decreased levels of 3-indoxyl sulfate are connected to propionate production and other carbohydrate degradation pathways.
  • The findings suggest a complex interaction between tryptophan, indole metabolites, and gut microbiota in patients with end-stage renal disease.
