Abstract

A total of 56 studies met the inclusion criteria for evaluating non-pharmacological interventions for insomnia.

  • Interventions significantly improved subjective sleep metrics in human trials, including measures like the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI) and Insomnia Severity Index (ISI).
  • The Dietary Index for Gut Microbiota (DI-GM) was found to be effective, and yeast mannan improved N3 sleep latency.
  • Whole-food patterns, such as the MIND diet and Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) decoctions, enriched beneficial gut bacteria and increased short-chain fatty acid production.
  • In animal models, certain gut bacteria strains and prebiotics restored neurochemical profiles related to sleep and reduced morning cortisol levels.
  • Current evidence is limited by reliance on subjective measures, short follow-up durations, and a gap between findings in rodent models and human outcomes.
