Harmine lengthens the daily rhythm of the brain’s main biological clock
Updated
Abstract
Harmine significantly lengthened the circadian period of PER2::LUC expression in various cell types.
- The circadian clock is a system that regulates biological rhythms in most organisms.
- Harmine has been found to increase the stability of the PER2 protein in neuronal cells and SCN slices.
- While harmine lengthened the circadian period, it did not induce the short-term expression of specific clock genes in embryonic fibroblasts.
- The effects of harmine were observed in NIH 3T3 fibroblasts, neuronal cells differentiated from progenitor cells, and SCN slices from PER2::LUC mice.
- These findings suggest that harmine may extend the circadian period by enhancing the stability of the PER2 protein.
