Healthy eating programs in early childhood care to improve diets of children aged 6 months to 6 years

Updated

Abstract

A total of 58 interventions targeting healthy eating in early childhood education and care (ECEC) settings were analyzed.

  • ECEC-based healthy eating interventions may slightly improve child diet quality, with a moderate likelihood of increasing fruit consumption.
  • The effect of these interventions on vegetable consumption remains uncertain.
  • There may be little to no change in children's consumption of less healthy foods and sugar-sweetened beverages.
  • Interventions could potentially reduce child weight and the risk of overweight and obesity, although changes in BMI and BMI z-scores are likely negligible.
  • Evidence regarding the cost-effectiveness of these interventions is very uncertain.
