Stress Hormone System Activation Does Not Explain Why Some People with Type 2 Diabetes Don't Respond to GLP-1R Agonist Treatment

Abstract

Pituitary GLP-1 receptor expression and HPA axis activation did not differ between responders and nonresponders to GLP-1 receptor agonist treatment.

  • Some individuals with type 2 diabetes do not respond to GLP-1 receptor agonists.
  • Activation of the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis may influence treatment response.
  • No differences in pituitary GLP-1 receptor expression were found between treatment responders and nonresponders.
  • Men showed markedly higher uptake of radiolabeled exendin in the pituitary compared to women.
  • Further research is needed to clarify the reasons behind treatment differences and explore sex differences in uptake.
