Id1 May Promote Obesity by Reducing Heat Production in Fat and Preventing Fat Cells from Becoming Heat-Producing

Updated

Abstract

Adipose tissue-specific overexpression of Id1 causes age-associated and high-fat diet-induced obesity in mice.

  • Id1 suppresses thermogenesis in brown adipose tissue by inhibiting the activity of PGC1α.
  • In white adipose tissue, Id1 is primarily found in the stromal vascular fraction, where progenitor cells are located.
  • The absence of Id1 leads to increased expression of beige adipocyte genes and Ucp1 when exposed to cold.
  • Brown-like differentiation is enhanced in Id1-deficient mouse embryonic fibroblasts.
  • Id1 interacts with and inhibits Ebf2, reducing the expression of Prdm16, which is crucial for beige/brown adipocyte development.
