Incretin-based drugs and fatty liver disease linked to metabolism problems

Abstract

Metabolic-dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD) is the most prevalent liver disease worldwide.

  • The rising prevalence of obesity and type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) is primarily driving the increase in MASLD cases.
  • Resmetirom is the only approved treatment specifically for metabolic dysfunction-associated steatohepatitis (MASH) to date.
  • Incretin-based receptor agonists show potential as treatments for MASLD due to their effects on weight loss and body fat reduction.
  • Emerging evidence suggests that incretin-based agents may lead to a significant reduction in liver fat content.
  • Improvement of steatohepatitis and/or fibrosis with incretin-based treatments remains inadequately supported by current evidence.
  • Incretin-based treatments may particularly benefit MASLD/MASH patients with obesity and/or T2DM, potentially mitigating progression in early stages.
