Nutrition, body function, and mental health factors in incretin-based treatments for adults: Expert consensus

Updated

Abstract

Incretin-based therapies may lead to substantial weight loss and cardiometabolic benefits.

  • Weight loss from incretin-based therapies is associated with potential improvements in obesity-related complications and quality of life.
  • Reduced appetite and rapid weight loss may create nutritional and psychological risks for some individuals.
  • Adequate protein intake and progressive resistance exercise could help preserve fat-free mass and physical function during weight loss.
  • Psychological challenges related to food reward and social connection may arise during incretin-based therapy, highlighting the need for psychological screening.
  • Monitoring of diet quality, micronutrient risk, and functional measures is suggested during weight loss to ensure safety.
  • Future research priorities include studying micronutrient status, dietary changes, and the effects of therapy cessation.
