Insomnia symptoms link eveningness to suicidal thoughts, feelings of defeat and entrapment, and distress in students

Updated

Abstract

Participants (n = 190) who preferred eveningness reported increased psychological distress and poorer affective functioning.

  • Eveningness is associated with higher levels of depression, anxiety, and suicidal thoughts among students.
  • Insomnia symptoms were found to completely or partially mediate the relationship between chronotype and negative affective outcomes.
  • Those with a preference for eveningness experienced more severe symptoms of stress and emotional distress.
  • The findings suggest that sleep disturbances may play a crucial role in the negative impacts of eveningness on mental health.
