Intermittent fasting may protect mice from Parkinson's-like symptoms by improving gut bacteria imbalance

Abstract

A 13-week intermittent fasting regimen significantly mitigated motor impairment and neurodegeneration in mice treated with a toxin associated with Parkinson's disease.

  • Intermittent fasting reduced α-synuclein aggregation and loss of dopaminergic neurons in MPTP-treated mice.
  • The fasting regimen decreased levels of pro-inflammatory cytokines and improved gut barrier integrity.
  • Activation of astrocytes and microglia was suppressed following intermittent fasting.
  • Fasting altered gut microbiota composition by decreasing harmful bacteria and increasing beneficial bacteria.
  • Short chain fatty acids in feces were elevated due to intermittent fasting, indicating metabolic changes.
  • Antibiotic treatment negated the positive effects of fasting, suggesting a role for gut microbiota in neuroprotection.
