Ketamine for sudden pain relief after injury: A practical clinical trial

Updated

Abstract

Patients receiving subdissociative ketamine infusion had an absolute reduction of 7 morphine milligram equivalents per day.

  • The addition of ketamine resulted in a 19% reduction in daily opioid exposure compared to standard care.
  • Total opioid exposure decreased by 20% in patients receiving ketamine.
  • Discharge rates with an opioid prescription were reduced by 5% in the ketamine group.
  • Patients receiving ketamine experienced a higher rate of delirium (11% vs. 6%), while other side effects were similar between groups.
  • Ketamine infusion may serve as a safe adjunct to traditional pain management in severely injured patients.
