Ketamine infusions for pain relief in older patients with many broken ribs: Results from a controlled trial

Updated

Abstract

Low-dose ketamine did not reduce 24-hour numeric pain scores or overall opioid use in elderly patients with rib fractures.

  • Thirty patients (50.8%) were assigned to the low-dose ketamine group in a trial involving elderly patients with three or more rib fractures.
  • No significant difference was observed in pain scores or opioid usage for the entire patient cohort after 24 hours.
  • In a subgroup with an Injury Severity Score greater than 15, low-dose ketamine was linked to reduced opioid use during the first 24 hours (25.6 mg vs. 42.6 mg, p = 0.04).
  • There were no differences in other secondary outcomes or adverse events between the ketamine and placebo groups.
