Ketamine infusions for pain relief in adults with multiple broken ribs: Results from a controlled trial

Updated

Abstract

Low-dose ketamine was not associated with a significant reduction in pain scores or opioid use in the overall cohort of rib fracture patients.

  • In a trial involving 91 patients with three or more rib fractures, 45 patients received low-dose ketamine while the others received a placebo.
  • Both groups had similar demographics, with 74.7% male and a median age of 49 years.
  • Among severely injured patients (Injury Severity Score >15), low-dose ketamine was associated with a significant reduction in opioid use during the first 24 hours.
  • Opioid use decreased from 68 to 35.7 mg in the first 24 hours and from 96 to 64.2 mg from 24 to 48 hours.
  • No significant differences were observed in pain scores, length of hospital stay, or adverse events across the groups.
