Ketamine and esketamine treatment for anxiety disorders and anxiety in depression: Systematic review

Updated

Abstract

Seventy-eight studies were reviewed regarding ketamine and esketamine for anxiety and depression.

  • Eleven studies focused on ketamine treatment for patients with DSM-5 anxiety disorders.
  • Sixty-seven studies evaluated es/ketamine for unipolar/bipolar depression, with a secondary focus on anxiety symptoms.
  • Study results suggest that es/ketamine may help reduce anxiety in both anxiety disorders and treatment-resistant depression.
  • Repeated doses and maintenance treatment may sustain anxiety reduction, but symptoms could return after stopping treatment.
  • Tablet formulations of es/ketamine may reduce anxiety more slowly, but have fewer side effects.
