One Week of L-Citrulline Supplements Improves Performance in Trained Cyclists

Updated

Abstract

L-citrulline supplementation resulted in a 5.2% improvement in cycling time trial performance among trained cyclists.

  • Nine trained male cyclists participated in a study comparing L-citrulline supplementation to a maltodextrin placebo.
  • Supplementation with 6 g of L-citrulline daily for one week was associated with a trend toward improved cycling performance (p = 0.08).
  • L-citrulline supplementation significantly increased average heart rate, perceived exertion, and average power during the time trial (p < 0.05).
  • The supplementation did not prevent fatigue during a subsequent supramaximal sprint repeat task.
  • This is the first study to suggest that L-citrulline may enhance endurance cycling performance in trained athletes.
