Keeping Muscle Mass with Exercise and Protein During Medication Treatment: A Plan for a Controlled Trial

Abstract

A trial will enroll 232 adults with obesity to evaluate the effects of resistance exercise and protein supplementation alongside semaglutide or tirzepatide therapy.

  • The trial will last for 6 months and is designed as a randomized controlled trial.
  • Participants will be divided into four groups: control, resistance exercise, protein supplementation, or a combination of both.
  • Primary outcomes include changes in muscle mass, measured by MRI of quadriceps cross-sectional area.
  • Secondary outcomes will assess liver fat content, body composition, strength, physical function, and metabolic biomarkers.
