Using tirzepatide to treat obesity in people with type 1 diabetes: plan for a single-center randomized trial

Updated

Abstract

A randomized trial will involve 60 patients with obesity and type 1 diabetes to test the safety and effectiveness of tirzepatide for weight loss.

  • Tirzepatide has shown ~22% weight loss maintenance in clinical trials for obesity.
  • Patients with type 2 diabetes experience a 15% body weight loss with tirzepatide while generally tolerating the medication well.
  • Concerns exist regarding the safety of tirzepatide in patients with type 1 diabetes, particularly those also experiencing obesity.
  • In Kuwait, over a quarter of individuals with type 1 diabetes also have obesity.
  • The trial aims to address the knowledge gap regarding the use and safety of tirzepatide in this specific patient population.
