Life's Simple 7 and New Cases of Heart Failure in a Diverse Population Study

Updated

Abstract

During a median follow-up of 12.2 years, 262 (4%) participants developed heart failure.

  • The incidence of heart failure decreased significantly as the number of ideal Life's Simple 7 metrics increased.
  • Participants with 0 to 1 ideal metrics had an incidence of 5.9 heart failure cases per 1000 person-years, compared to 0.6 per 1000 person-years for those with 6 to 7 ideal metrics.
  • Hazard ratios for heart failure were 0.57 for average LS7 scores (9-10 points) and 0.31 for optimal scores (11-14 points) compared to inadequate scores (0-8 points).
  • This pattern was consistent across four racial/ethnic groups: white, Chinese American, black, and Hispanic.
