Nighttime light exposure and breast cancer risk: Results from the Sister Study

Updated

Abstract

During 11 years of follow-up, 3,734 breast cancer cases were identified among 47,145 participants.

  • Outdoor light at night (LAN) was associated with a modest increase in breast cancer risk, but only before adjusting for other environmental factors.
  • After accounting for correlated ambient exposures, the association between outdoor LAN and breast cancer risk was no longer significant.
  • Sleeping with a light or TV on indoors was linked to a higher risk of breast cancer compared to those with no indoor light exposure.
