Link between light at night and sleep problems: A review and combined analysis of studies

Updated

Abstract

Higher levels of nighttime light exposure are associated with a 22% increased prevalence of sleep problems.

  • A total of 7 cross-sectional studies with 577,932 participants were analyzed.
  • Indoor light exposure at night had a significantly higher association with sleep problems (Summary Odds Ratio: 1.74) compared to outdoor exposure (Summary Odds Ratio: 1.19).
  • A dose-response analysis indicated that light intensity above 5.8 nW/cm/sr is linked to an increased prevalence of sleep problems.
  • The findings suggest that maintaining darkness in bedrooms at night may help reduce sleep problems.
  • Further longitudinal studies with improved assessment methods for nighttime light exposure are needed.
