Nighttime light exposure and breast cancer risk: A combined review and analysis

Updated

Abstract

A total of 14 studies involving 13,155 breast cancer cases among 372,802 exposed subjects were analyzed.

  • Participants in the highest light at night (LAN) exposure category were associated with a 12% increased risk of breast cancer compared to those in the lowest exposure category.
  • Higher indoor LAN exposure was linked to a 13% increased risk of breast cancer.
  • Outdoor LAN exposure showed a pronounced association with breast cancer risk among women with estrogen receptor positive tumors, with a 21% increased risk.
  • Premenopausal women also exhibited a 21% increased risk of breast cancer associated with outdoor LAN exposure.
  • The overall confidence in the evidence linking LAN exposure to breast cancer risk was graded as 'moderate'.
