Lithium Aspartate for Fatigue and Thinking Problems in Long COVID: A Randomized Clinical Trial

Updated

Abstract

Fifty-two participants were enrolled in a trial assessing lithium aspartate therapy for neurologic post-COVID-19 condition symptoms.

  • Lithium aspartate at doses of 10 to 15 mg/d did not show significant differences in reducing fatigue or cognitive dysfunction compared to placebo.
  • The primary outcome, measured by changes in fatigue and cognitive dysfunction scores, had no significant intergroup differences (P = .59).
  • Among three patients in a subsequent dose-finding study, higher doses of lithium (40 to 45 mg/d) may lead to greater reductions in symptoms compared to lower doses.
  • No adverse events were linked to lithium therapy during the trial.
  • Another randomized trial is needed to explore the effects of higher lithium dosages on neurologic post-COVID-19 condition.
