How Liu-Wei-Di-Huang Pills may help treat type 2 diabetes by affecting gut bacteria and their production of short-chain fatty acids

Updated

Abstract

Liu-Wei-Di-Huang Pills (LWDH) significantly altered gut microbiota and increased short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs) in Goto-Kakizaki rats with type 2 diabetes mellitus.

  • Treatment with LWDH changed the microbial structure, enhancing the presence of Firmicutes bacteria such as Lactobacillus, Allobaculum, and Ruminococcus_2.
  • LWDH administration led to increased levels of SCFAs, including acetic acid, propionic acid, and butyric acid.
  • The treatment was associated with improvements in type 2 diabetes symptoms and jejunum damage.
  • Potential mechanisms for these effects may involve the SCFAs-GPR43/41-GLP-1 pathway.
