Lung Problems in Long COVID and Their Link to Thinking Difficulties

Updated

Abstract

Twelve participants with Long COVID reported significant cognitive and emotional symptoms more than two years after infection.

  • Participants experienced reduced perceived cognitive function alongside increased fatigue, anxiety, and sleep disturbance.
  • Objective cognitive performance was generally within normal limits despite reported symptoms.
  • Lower gas exchange measured by 129 Xe MRI was linked to more severe sleep disturbances and reduced executive functioning.
  • Elevated brain blood flow was observed in those with worse lung function and cognitive symptoms.
  • These findings may suggest a connection between lung issues and cognitive problems in Long COVID.
