Long-term use of GLP-1 receptor therapy linked to fewer complications after planned spine surgery in overweight adults

Abstract

GLP-1 receptor agonist therapy was associated with significantly lower odds of postoperative complications in 5680 matched patients undergoing elective laminectomy.

  • Long-term preoperative GLP-1 RA therapy was linked to reduced odds of sepsis (OR 0.38 at 90 days; 0.52 at 1 year).
  • Patients receiving GLP-1 RAs had lower odds of deep vein thrombosis (0.26; 0.41) and wound dehiscence (0.38; 0.47).
  • Surgical site infections were significantly less likely in GLP-1 RA users (0.37; 0.43) compared to nonusers.
  • Reduced mortality rates were observed in the GLP-1 RA group (0.30; 0.48), with all outcomes showing statistical significance (p < 0.001).
  • Acute kidney injury showed a borderline reduction in the GLP-1 RA group (OR 0.80; p = 0.046).
  • No significant differences were noted for myocardial infarction, pneumonia, or stroke between the groups.
