Fewer Complications and Better Survival After Back Fusion Surgery With Postoperative GLP-1 Receptor Agonist Treatment

Abstract

Among 169,286 patients who underwent lumbar arthrodesis, 1,844 had postoperative GLP-1 receptor agonist use.

  • Postoperative GLP-1 receptor agonist use is associated with a lower risk of pneumonia (Risk Ratio 0.51) within 90 days.
  • A reduced risk of surgical site infection (Risk Ratio 0.58) is observed in patients using GLP-1 receptor agonists postoperatively.
  • GLP-1 receptor agonist use is linked to a decreased risk of sepsis (Risk Ratio 0.64) in the early postoperative period.
  • Patients using GLP-1 receptor agonists post-surgery may experience fewer urinary tract infections (Risk Ratio 0.56).
  • Wound dehiscence is associated with a lower risk (Risk Ratio 0.46) in those receiving GLP-1 receptor agonists.
  • Postoperative GLP-1 receptor agonist use is correlated with a lower hazard of death (Hazard Ratio 0.38) at 1 year.
