Long-term Metabolic Problems in Female Mice from Repeated Moderate Limits on a High-Fat, High-Sugar Diet

Updated

Abstract

Female mice subjected to intermittent food restriction showed impaired glucose tolerance after reintroduction of ad libitum feeding.

  • Intermittently food-restricted mice gained less weight and fat mass compared to controls during the restriction phase.
  • After resuming ad libitum access, these mice exhibited increased food intake during the light phase.
  • Minor differences in energy expenditure were noted between the groups by week 40.
  • At week 42, glucose tolerance was worse in the restricted mice than in controls.
  • Trends indicated lower levels of certain appetite-regulating hormones in the restricted mice after feeding.
