Magnesium reduces natural and triggered contractions in isolated uterine muscle
Updated
Abstract
Magnesium sulfate reduced spontaneous myometrial contractions by up to 100% at a concentration of 3 mM.
- The relaxant effect of magnesium sulfate on myometrial contractions was observed in both pregnant and non-pregnant women.
- Spontaneous contractions decreased in a dose-dependent manner, with significant reductions at concentrations of 2.0-2.5 mM.
- Oxytocin-induced contractions were reduced by 30-40% at an 8 mM concentration, with further reductions at higher concentrations.
- Maximum effects on induced contractions were noted at 20 minutes, indicating both dose and time dependency.
- No significant differences were found in the response of pregnant versus non-pregnant myometrium.
